Evaluation Task 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Max: For this first part of our evaluation we will explain how our media product develops or challenges forms and conventions of 'real' media products.
Ashleigh: In this first screen shot we establish 2 characters a police detective and a witness. The shot shows very stereotypical types of behavior reinforced for this scenario (the detective is stern while the witness is very stressed and very uneasy) and as such shows this character reinforcing stereotype.

In this next shot we see another development of convention for this movie. the witness holds up evidence (which we see with the use of an over the shoulder shot) this is a standard stereotype of 'real crime' as evidence is shown in a crime scene environment. this once again reinforces stereotype.

In this shot we see the stern faced detective giving a rather judgmental look to the witness we feel the witnesses' emotion through the use of the over shoulder shot we see the situation from the witness point of view. this reinforces the stereotype because this is how a police detective would act in an interrogation interview

In this shot convention is reinforced the reason for this is we have no idea who this man staring at the london eye. The stereotype that has been set up for this character is one of mystery, this causes the Who is he? what does he want? why is he important in this film? which reinforces the stereotype of crime thriller as we now have further elements of mystery added to the story instead of just two men talking in an interrogation room

In this shot we see a single photo of a map of
London with pins surrounding certain areas in the city this is a reinforcement of stereotypical police behavior that shows the police officers/ detectives involved in this films case are focused around the city of London which reinforces thriller conventions and stereotypes as cities are common locations for thriller's
In this next shot we see a view of a distinct london sight Piccadilly Circus this shot reinforces conventions of thriller as thrillers productions are usually set in busy locations such as cities therefore this shot reinforces convention.

In this next shot we can see that a key character is being shown as in the photo (which can be seen by the fact he is in focus while everyone else remains outside of focus and blurred) this once again reinforces thriller convention as we have been given a character who is shown to be an important part of the story yet we are given nothing else about him, not even a face view, which in turn creates mystery and suspense (a common thriller convention)
The next shot that we have is also reinforcing conventions of thriller as this shot further builds a n air of suspense and mystery around the character (much like the previous shot) instead in this shot a different effect is used to show he is a mysterious person. As he walks down the street the camera begins to un - focus further showing the audience that the character is both critical to the story and mysterious.
The final shot shown here once again reinforces stereotype of thriller conventions as in our production we used conventional font and colors in our title screen (black and grey) which reinforces stereotype as we have used the same kind of font and color scheme that has been used in thrillers such as se7en and inception meaning stereotype was reinforced.

Max: This is question 2 for our media evaluation we'd like to start this by showing you a picture of our main protagonist Charlie here we see his most 'prominent' scene as you can see he has the character stereotype of a 'lone cop'. we can see that he has a very serious outlook and he gives the feeling that he doesn't mess around.
Ashleigh: We decided to compare our 'lone cop' character to the popular TV crime drama character of Sherlock because they share some similar aspects from these screen shots we can see both characters share the seriousness for there police service and have a serious outlook on life we also see that that the same kind of clothing is worn and the same occupation is shared by the two characters.
Max: The role gender plays in Sherlock is also a lot different from our own film as in our film we have a 'all male film' while we did not intend for this we found that gen rder representation would mean that a male cast would have made for a better viewing of our film (we thought a film with such a serious storyline would need a strong cast to back it up and create the correct atmosphere and stereotype for the thriller).
Ashleigh: For the title of our opening sequence we found many other film titles which look alike to ours. Se7en, Buried, The Prestige, and Shutter Island are all similar to ours as they have black backgrounds and lighter coloured writing.

Evaluation Task 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Ashleigh, Max and Nicole's Group Thriller Blog!: Question 3 directors commentery: Video with directors commentary: A production company provides help and stay with you during the process of making of your film until it...
A production company provides help and stay with you during the process of making of your film until it is published. Production companies are often responsible for budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the organization of staff, the production itself, post-production, distribution and marketing. It is also important for the production company to find appropriate actors/actresses to play the roles.
Most production companies are either owned or under a contract with a media conglomerate (such as Sony, Warner Brother, or Universal), a film studio, entertainment company or Motion Picture Company. The production company of the film hold all the rights to the film, and sort out the legal terms, and contracts with the studio you are using and the music/background track you might be using in your film. If the production company is fully integrated (vertically and horizontally) the legal rights to use music will become easier as they might own the rights already. If they are a company like Sony, the production company of Sony already own their own brand of equipment, Sony music will have rights to contracted singers/artists, and Sony also have their own studios which can be used. This also helps the production company save money, as they wont have to pay for hiring the studio, and paying for the rights to use a soundtrack.
A film distributor is purely responsible for releasing the film to the public. It is then also down the production company or film distributor to market the film, and sort out the advertising and promotion side of the production. It is down to the film distributor to send enough prints of the film to the exhibitors (theaters/cinemas) and having an agreement of how long the film is to stay in the cinemas.
How would a low budget film get money?
Then it comes to money, there are a few ways a company like ours could get funded. As stakeholders in our company, we could all put in money from our own finances to fund the film. After the film gets released, hopefully it will earn more money that it cost, ensuring we would get a profit. If it did this, the original amount of money we contributed into the film we would be able to get back, and the extra money could be shared out as well, or put back into the company film fund for another film.
Another way the company could get money is by taking out a loan. This is often used to fund a company to make the film.
When creating our titles for our thriller, we did some research into what job titles were named in the other films. We did take into consideration which order they were in as well, and in what style. For example, the roles appeared in the form of 'Music by Max Brandon' and 'Costume Design by Angela Stevens' however the names of the actors had just their names, and did not say 'Actor-Matt Williams', but instead just said 'Matt Williams'. This gave more of a dramatic effect and made the film look more professional as other films also did this.
If we were to compare our film to any other film, we think it would be Inception. Although it doesnt have the psychological thriller genre, it is set out in the same way, and has the crime side of it. it is set in a busy city, which ours is also set in, and it has mostly men in.
Evaluation Task 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?
Ashleigh, Max and Nicole's Group Thriller Blog!: Evaluation Task 4 - audience types: In this task we will talk about audience types that are likely to watch our film, from our own analysis of our audience we we found that o...
There are numerous reasons why these people may watch our film. For example the males may watch our film as he watches a large majority of independent films, they may also enjoy our film as he seems to go out of his way to find certain style/ music, so there is no reason why he wouldn't do the same for film. Some reasons why our 39 year old male may find himself drawn to watching our film is because of his love of TV shows similar to our own production (Sherlock has been given feedback saying that it is 'a lot like our own production').
Another way we could find different audience types who may be interested in watching our production is by linking our production on independent media websites, or taking our film to independent film festivals using these we can get a much more clear view of just who is our 'niche' audience (how old they are, what films they enjoy, etc).

List of software:
FinalCutPro
We used FinalCutPro to edit and cut our footage. This allowed us to create different layers to edit our work on (a bit like photoshop layers), and although was hard to use at the beginning, soon became natural for us to use.
The internet helped us during both the research and the making stages of the project. We used the internet for almost all of our tasks, and even to the point of finding out what the weather was like so we could shoot our film in London. If we were unsure about how to do a technique on FinalCutPro, we used the internet to find a video or step by step of how to do that certain technique.
Photobooth -for quick photos
The only occasions we used Photobooth were to take quick pitures of hand-drawn mind maps, and quick group photos needed for our blog. This programme is not really a professional software as it does not produce high quality images/video.
Youtube has been very helpful during our project. Without Youtube we wouldn't have the help from over 120,000,000 videos that are available to us. We used Youtube to find out new techniques for the software we were using, for example Garage-band and FinalCutPro.To enable the public to view and give feedback on our video, Youtube was a big help, and also allowed us to put the videos on our blog.
Without Blogger, nobody would be able to view all the hard work we put into the project. Blogger enabled us to post work onto the internet for people to view, and also helped us link the videos we created from Youtube to the blog.
Facebook
This social networking website helped us to get feedback on the video. We also used Facebook for group discussions about meeting up, ideas and planning our media project.
BubblUs
BubblUs is a website to used to create mind maps. We used this website mainly during our planning process of our project. It was an organised way of presenting work and ideas we had for our thriller opening.
List of Equipment:
Sony HDV Digital Camera HVR A1E
Tripod
Lights HDV Z96
Iphone for Foley
Apple Mac Computer
Throughout the whole of the project we have used Mac Computers. These computers are widely used in our school, so not only do we have lots of benefits from using Apple Computers, these computers are actually the only choice we have when it comes to working on a Computer.
