Ashleigh, Max and Nicole's Group Thriller Blog!: Audience Research Statistics

Below are some statistics for different films, and a small analysis of why the statistics are like the way they are.
Shutter Island.
As you can see from the stats, the most popular age group that have rated the movie are 18-29 year olds. Although the rating of the movie is 15, this doesn't mean the audience will be 15 year olds, it just means that the film is suitable for anyone aged 15 years or older. The stats from Shutter Island suggest that the target audience for the movie is 18-29 year olds.
Also, the gender shows that more men have rated the movie than women. This could be because men are more likely to rate films on the internet than women, but also that more men like the film, or have an interest in thrillers.
Here is the link to the official trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iaYLCiq5RM
The main characters in this film are men, aged around 30 years old. This reflects the gender of the audience because men may want to watch the film as it looks scary, or the lead actor of Leonardo DiCaprio might be a male role model to them. A reason for women to like the film may be because of Leonardo DiCaprio being rather good looking, or they may just enjoy the genre.

The Dark Knight.
From the statistics off the IMDB website, we can see that the gender that rated the movie the most is Males. And the target audience for this movie is people aged 18-29 years old. This age range could be commonly popular because it is the young adults who have spare time and who would go to the cinemas to see the movies. They might also be the most popular because this age range is known for being popular and frequent internet users.
Here is the trailer for The Dark Knight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ5U8suTUw0
This is very popular with males as the lead character is a male, and men can look up to this hero figure.

The Silence of the Lambs.

This is one of the top rated thriller films on the IMBD website. The gender rating is also mostly men. And the age range that is the highest is also 18-29 year olds. This is the same for all 3 movies i have researched, and shows the same trend that most thrillers are liked more by men, and people who are aged 18-29 years old.
Here is the link for The Silence of the Lambs trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQKs169Sl0I
In this film one of the main characters is female, this may slightly change the audience who watch the film, and whether there are more females, or more male watchers in the audience.
Pulp Fiction
This film, from stats would show that the majority of people who have rated the film are male, and aged from 18-29 years old. For the same reasons as listed above in previous analysis, this could be because some males spend more time on the internet than females. It can not fully represent who enjoys watching thrillers between women vs men, because maybe not all women have rated the movie on the IMDB website.
Here is the trailer for Pulp Fiction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDbSbOsoRnY
The ratio between men and women for this movie is bigger than the last movie which suggests that less women like this movie, than the other one, or less women have watched this movie compared to The Silence of the Lambs.

Ashleigh, Max and Nicole's Group Thriller Blog!: Group Meeting - 15/11/11

We were not successful when filming the Dexter opening, as the camera was not working properly. We all take responsibility for the problems we faced. Resulting in this, we received a level 1 grade.

Permission from City of London.

To be able to film in London, it is courtosy to ask and let them know.
Here is the link for the website containing the information we need to know:
http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Arts_and_entertainment/guidelines.htm

On this link it clearly states "On the basis that you are filming with a small crew only (less than eight people), keeping to public walkway, are using portable equipment only and you will not cause any obstruction, danger or offence to others, then you are not obliged to submit an application. However it is deemed good practice to submit an application for all shoots and we advise you do so as we can then notify relevant parties such as the Police and Highways that you will be filming and in turn we can send you confirmation that we see no objection to your filming.''

So..technically, we dont need to do one. But we will attempt to get a reply from them anyway.
Here is where i got so far, however we needed insurance information which i didnt have... :/

Concepts of a thriller

This is from one of the first lessons we had on the concepts of thillers. I had just forgotten to upload it :)

25 word treatment

Threatening graffiti appears in the City of London. No trace of CCTV is found, except a few reports from locals on the estate. The M.E.T police are doing their best to control the area, until they realise that a few of their police force are missing. The gang continue to manipulate the police force, until there is a major error in the gang's plan, ... but will the police capture the criminals?

Parity remake notes

When filming Ashleigh and Max were the actors in the film, and I did the filming and camera angles. To help us we had Max's and Ashleigh's phone. On Max's phone we had the still shots which were on the year 12 blog, and on Ashleigh's phone we had the video we were remaking. This helped us shoot the camera angles correctly, and helped us replicate the original video.
Some difficulties we did have, was that we couldn't get the 'blood' on the wall of the toilets because we did not own the toilets, and there was a risk of it staining the walls. We overcome this problem and  decided to put blood on the sink instead, as that would wipe off easily, and was in the right position to work well.
During the filming, we were limited on time as we had to get to form, or our next lesson, so some of our shots were rushed, and we didn't have enough time to perfect them.

9 Frame analysis

Panic Room
I screen shot the frames which i felt were most important and had meaning.
The frames show sights from New York, setting the scene in a busy City.
1) what happens in the scene?
there are various camera angles of buildings in New York.
2) how does it set up the story?
it doesn't set up the story, however it does set up some of the scenery. The film is about a mother and daughter being trapped in their new houses panic room, while men break into their house. so, there is hidden messages of the different types of buildings, and rooms inside them.
In one of the frames, there is a billboard, which has a happy couple on hugging, this could relate to the mother being divorced and her relationship problems.
3) how does it introduce the key characters?
it doesn't
4)how does this relate to the ending?
it shows different houses and buildings, and the ending is of the mother and daughter looking for a new house

9 Frame analysis

Se7en
After watching the whole of the Se7en movie, i have done an analysis of the opening, and screen shot what i feel are the most important shots of the sequence.
(i dont know how to make better looking 3x3 photos, but here was my best try)

1) what is the purpose of the opening of a film?
-to give an insight to what is to come. There may be hidden messages that the audience won't pick up on until after they watch the film.
2) how does it set up thriller conventions of characters, story, mystery, Enigma code?
-it does not reveal any faces of the characters, which gives mystery, because you can only see fingers, and movements of objects.
-it gives us clues to what the movie is about, for example the frame of when the person is cutting off his fingerprints suggests that he is hiding his identity or running from the police, and the disturbing pictures of a persons face being drawn over suggests that the person does not want that person to be alive no longer/wants him to be removed. The frame of the photo of the person being tortured foreshadows what is to come in the rest of the film.
- all the frames are dark coloured, with only black, brown, off white and some red slides. These colours are all linked to murder, especially the red representing blood. The other colours are dull, which you don't get in genres such as comedies, or romance.
-at the end of the frames, there is one which is someone removing the word 'GOD' from a newspaper, or book, this relates the book to be something to do with religion.
- mystery is created throughout the whole of the title sequence, because you won't know what is going on if you hadn't seen the film before (like me).
-Enigma codes: the answers we wanted to know while watching the opening/film. Who is the murderer? Why are they doing it? What is the meaning? How are the other people going to die?
3) What makes the audience want to watch the rest?
-the audience would want to find out the questions asked above. Like who the murderer was, and how are the other people going to die? The suspense and mystery is keeping them interested. Or Brad Pitt....
